Decision Fatigue: The Hidden Reason You’re Stuck

Gail J Chisholm

(And how to find your way back)

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, foggy, indecisive, or strangely irritated by the tiniest choices, you might be experiencing decision fatigue. And the truth is — most of us are, whether we realise it or not.

We make thousands of decisions a day. Some are big and life-shaping. Others are tiny, like what to have for dinner or whether to reply to that message. But when your nervous system is overloaded, even the smallest decision can feel like a mountain.

As I shared in this week’s episode of The Unstuck Edit, decision fatigue shows up in sneaky ways:

  • Procrastinating over tiny choices
  • Feeling like everything is equally urgent
  • Avoiding decisions altogether
  • Making impulsive choices you later regret
  • Becoming emotionally reactive
  • Second-guessing yourself
  • Losing creativity

One line from the transcript sums it up perfectly:

“Decision fatigue isn’t simply about making loads and loads of choices — it’s about making choices while carrying uncertainty, responsibility, emotional weights.”

And when your nervous system is strained, even deciding what to eat can feel like too much.

Why This Matters

Decision fatigue keeps you stuck. It keeps you looping. It keeps you overwhelmed. And it disconnects you from your intuition — the part of you that already knows what you need.

How to Recover

Here are some of the tools I shared:

  • Create defaults: e.g. capsule wardrobe, set meals, fixed workout days
  • Decide once: e.g., “I exercise Mon/Wed/Fri” instead of asking daily
  • Reduce options: choose between two instead of ten
  • Separate thinking from doing: weekly CEO hour
  • Interrupt perfectionism: ask: “Will this matter in six months?”
  • Regulate your nervous system: breathwork, embodiment, nature, movement
  • Tune into your body: expansion vs contraction, body compass, intuitive yes/no.  Your body knows before your brain does. When you create space, clarity returns.

Journal Prompts

  • Where in my life am I procrastinating over tiny decisions?
  • What decisions could I “decide once” to reduce daily mental load?
  • What does my body feel like when something is a yes? What does it feel like when it’s a no?
